Why do the Classic Camping Trek?

A trekking experience through the Lençóis Maranhenses that combines the classic crossing between Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro with two nights of camping among the dunes and lagoons of the National Park.

37 km trek | 2 nights of camping

The Classic Crossing with Camping is an option for those who want to cover the route between Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro with a more immersive experience in the Lençóis Maranhenses.

Over the three days, the route passes through the Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos oases, with hikes between dunes, lagoons, and traditional communities.

Instead of overnight stays in locals' homes, this version of the crossing includes two nights of camping, allowing the group to stay even closer to the natural landscape of the National Park.

The camping structure is set up by the team, and a support guide accompanies the group to carry the larger equipment, such as tents, chairs, and cooking gear.

Peadouro ZoneDay 1

Barreirinhas → Rio Negro → Oásis Baixa Grande → Zona do Peadouro

Peadouro Zone

The group will be picked up at their guesthouses starting at 4:30 AM in Barreirinhas. For participants staying in Atins, pickup starts at 6:30 AM.

In 4x4 vehicles, we drive for approximately 2 hours toward the National Park, along an off-road route to the area near Rio Negro.

Along the way, we make a stop for a breakfast snack and to watch the sunrise.

From there, we begin a trek of approximately 6 km, lasting on average 2 to 3 hours, to Oásis Baixa Grande, with a stop to swim in the lagoons.

Arrival at the oasis is expected around 10:30 AM, followed by lunch.

After lunch and a rest period, we resume the trek for another 8 km to the Zona do Peadouro, where our camping area will be set up.

Dinner will be served around 7:30 PM.

Overnight: camping at Zona do Peadouro.

Lagoa da LuaDay 2

Zona do Peadouro → Queimada dos Britos → Lagoa da Lua

Lagoa da Lua

Breakfast will be served at 5:30 AM, with departure expected at 6:00 AM.

We begin the trek toward Oásis Queimada dos Britos, covering approximately 7 km through the dunes and lagoons.

Arrival at the oasis happens in the morning, where lunch will be served.

After lunch, we'll have a rest period until approximately 3:00 PM.

In the afternoon, we resume the trek for another 8 km toward Lagoa da Lua, where our second camping area will be set up.

Dinner will be served around 7:00 PM.

Overnight: camping in the Lagoa da Lua area.

Santo AmaroDay 3

Lagoa da Lua → Lagoa do Junco / Cajueiro → Santo Amaro

Santo Amaro

Breakfast will be served at 5:30 AM, with departure expected at 6:00 AM.

We continue trekking for approximately 8 km to the Lagoa do Junco/Cajueiro area, with a stop to swim in the lagoons.

Arrival is expected around 9:00 AM.

From there, we board 4x4 vehicles for the transfer to Santo Amaro do Maranhão, where the crossing will end around 10:30 AM.

Before you book

It's approximately a 37 km trek over three days.

The route goes through the dunes and includes different trekking sections throughout the day.

There are two nights of camping.

The structure is provided and set up by the team, but each participant should be prepared for a camping experience in a natural environment.

You'll carry your own backpack and sleeping pad.

The sleeping pad is provided by the agency, is lightweight, and each participant carries it during the trek. The rest of the camping equipment is carried by the support guide.

Support luggage is included.

Each participant can leave one small or medium bag, up to 10 kg, which will be stored in Barreirinhas and sent to Santo Amaro.

The lagoons depend on rainfall.

Water levels vary throughout the season and across different areas of the park.

Times are planned to make the most of the best hiking conditions.

Some departures happen in the early morning hours, taking advantage of cooler temperatures and the sunrise.
