An experience through the heart of the Lençóis

A 48 km trek through the heart of the Lençóis Maranhenses, passing through the oases of Baixa Grande, Queimada dos Britos and Rancharia, with four days of hiking, lagoons, dunes and contact with native communities.

The 4-Day Trek is an option for those who want a more complete experience through the heart of the Lençóis Maranhenses.

In addition to the oases of Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos, the itinerary includes a night in the village of Rancharia, deepening the experience of contact with the communities that live within the National Park.

Over the four days, there are approximately 48 km of hiking between dunes and lagoons, with stops for swimming, watching the sunrise and sunset, and moments of rest at the oases.

The three nights are spent in hammocks at native families' homes, providing an authentic experience of living alongside the communities of the Lençóis.

Baixa Grande OasisDay 1

Barreirinhas → Oásis Baixa Grande

Baixa Grande Oasis

Trekking: approximately 6 km

Walking time: 2 to 3 hours

Overnight: Baixa Grande Oasis

The day starts early. Pickup in Barreirinhas begins at 04:30 AM, with participants collected from their guesthouses. For participants staying in Atins, pickup begins at 06:30 AM.

We head out in a 4x4 vehicle toward the area near the Rio Negro, on an off-road route of approximately two hours along the access path to the National Park.

Along the way, we stop for breakfast and to watch the sunrise.

From there, our trek through the interior of the Lençóis begins. It's approximately 6 km to the Baixa Grande Oasis, with time to take in the scenery and enjoy the lagoons for a swim.

Arrival at the oasis is expected at approximately 10:30 AM.

After lunch and a rest period, we head back to the dunes to enjoy the lagoons and watch the sunset.

At the end of the day, we return to the community for dinner and to spend the night in a hammock at a local family's home.

Queimada dos Britos OasisDay 2

Oásis Baixa Grande → Oásis Queimada dos Britos

Queimada dos Britos Oasis

Trekking: approximately 12 km

Walking time: about 5 hours

Overnight: Queimada dos Britos Oasis

The second day starts early. Breakfast is served around 04:30 AM, and at 05:00 AM we begin the trek toward the Queimada dos Britos Oasis.

It's approximately 12 km of walking through the interior of the Lençóis Maranhenses.

Along the way, we cross the Rio Negro, watch the sunrise, and stop for swims in the lagoons.

Arrival at Queimada dos Britos is expected at approximately 10:30 AM, when lunch will be served.

After a rest period, we head back to the dunes in the afternoon to enjoy the lagoons again and watch the sunset.

At the end of the day, we return to the community for dinner and rest.

The night will be spent in a hammock, at a local family's home.

Included on this day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and overnight stay.

RanchariaDay 3

Oásis Queimada dos Britos → Rancharia

Rancharia

Trekking: approximately 14 km

Walking time: about 6 hours

Overnight: Rancharia Village

The third day starts early. Breakfast is served around 03:30 AM, and at 04:00 AM we begin the trek toward the village of Rancharia.

It's approximately 14 km of walking, with stops for swims and moments to take in the lagoons and the scenery of the Lençóis Maranhenses.

Arrival at Rancharia is expected at approximately 10:00 AM, followed by lunch around 11:00 AM.

Rancharia is a small community located within the National Park, made up of families who live in the region. During our stay, we have the chance to learn more about the community's daily life and way of living.

The area is also home to Lagoa do Bicudo Gordo, one of the park's standout lagoons.

After resting, we head back to the dunes in the afternoon for a swim in the lagoons and to watch the sunset.

At the end of the day, we return to the community for dinner and to spend the night in a hammock at a local family's home.

Santo AmaroDay 4

Rancharia → Lagoa do Junco/Cajueiro → Santo Amaro

Santo Amaro

Trekking: approximately 16 km

Departure: around 04:00 AM

Arrival in Santo Amaro: approximately 10:00–10:30 AM

The final day begins before dawn. After breakfast, we start the trek around 04:00 AM toward the Lagoa do Junco/Cajueiro.

It's approximately 16 km of walking, averaging 5 hours.

Along the way, we stop to watch the sunrise and enjoy a swim in one of the area's lagoons.

Arrival at Lagoa do Junco is expected at approximately 09:00 AM. After a period for swimming and resting, we head directly to Santo Amaro in a 4x4 vehicle.

Arrival in town is expected at approximately 10:00–10:30 AM, marking the official end of the trek.

Is the 4-Day Trek right for me?

The trek is classified as moderate and requires willingness to walk several kilometers over dunes and sandy terrain for four days.

Where will we sleep?

The three nights are spent at the Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos oases and in the village of Rancharia, in hammocks at local families' homes.

Do I need to carry my own backpack?

Yes. Each participant must carry their personal belongings during the trek. We recommend bringing only the essentials.

Are the lagoons full year-round?

No. The amount of water varies according to each year's rainfall. In general, the flooded lagoons period occurs between April and September, but conditions can vary.

What time do we arrive in Santo Amaro?

The estimated arrival in Santo Amaro is between 10:00 AM and 10:30 AM on the fourth day.
