Why do the Traditional Trek?

A complete trek across the Lençóis Maranhenses, combining a speedboat ride, long hikes through the dunes, lagoons, oases and traditional communities all the way to Santo Amaro.

A full experience for those who want to cross the Lençóis Maranhenses in five days, taking in different landscapes of the National Park and getting to know some of its most iconic spots.

The itinerary covers approximately 55 km on foot, passing through Atins, the Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos oases, and the village of Betânia, all the way to Santo Amaro.

The experience begins with a speedboat ride through the Pequenos Lençóis Maranhenses and continues through a combination of dunes, lagoons, traditional communities and long stretches of hiking.

Throughout the trek, overnight stays take place in hammock camps, including local families' homes, offering a closer connection with the region's culture and way of life.

Canto dos LençóisDay 1

Barreirinhas → Pequenos Lençóis → Atins → Canto dos Lençóis

Canto dos Lençóis

The experience begins in Barreirinhas, departing around 8:30 AM from Beira Rio.

The first leg is done by speedboat, crossing the Pequenos Lençóis Maranhenses region, with stops in Vassouras and Mandacaru. After these visits, the group heads to Atins beach, where lunch will be served.

After a short rest, we continue along Atins beach to the starting point of the trek toward Canto dos Lençóis, already inside the National Park.

It's approximately 8 km of hiking, taking 2 to 3 hours, crossing the dune field, with stops to swim in the lagoons and take in the scenery.

In the late afternoon, we pause to enjoy the sunset.

The overnight stay will be at Canto dos Lençóis, a support point that hosts trekking groups from all over the world. Accommodation is in hammocks.

Baixa GrandeDay 2

Canto dos Lençóis → Baixa Grande

Baixa Grande

After breakfast, served at 6:30 AM, a 4x4 vehicle will take the group along the Lençóis Maranhenses coastline to the area near Rio Negro, where the hike begins.

The route offers beautiful views of the coast and the region's dunes.

From Rio Negro, it's approximately 6 km of hiking, with stops to swim in the lagoons. Arrival at the Baixa Grande community is expected before lunchtime.

After lunch and a rest period, the group heads back to the dunes to enjoy the lagoons.

In the late afternoon, we'll take in the sunset at one of the most striking settings in the Lençóis Maranhenses.

Lunch, dinner and the overnight stay will take place at a local family's home, offering a community-based tourism experience.

Queimada dos Britos OasisDay 3

Oásis Baixa Grande → Oásis Queimada dos Britos

Queimada dos Britos Oasis

Breakfast will be served at 4:30 AM, with the hike departing at 5 AM.

The stretch to the Queimada dos Britos Oasis is approximately 12 km, covered in about 5 hours.

Along the way, we'll cross the Rio Negro, watch the sunrise and stop to swim in the lagoons.

Arrival at the Queimada dos Britos Oasis is expected around 10:30 AM, when lunch will be served.

After resting, we'll head back to the dunes to enjoy the lagoons and take in the sunset.

Lunch, dinner and the overnight stay will take place at a local family's home.

BetâniaDay 4

Oásis Queimada dos Britos → Betânia

Betânia

Breakfast will be served at 2:30 AM, with the hike starting at 3 AM.

This is one of the longest stretches of the trek, approximately 18 km, covered in about 6 hours, with stops to swim in the lagoons.

Along the way, we'll pass by some of the region's largest lagoons, such as Lagoa das Cabras, Lagoa do Junco and Lagoa do Cajueiro.

Arrival at the village of Betânia is expected around 11 AM.

On the edge of the dunes, the village offers the chance to swim in the Rio Alegre and connect more closely with the local community.

After lunch and a rest period, we'll head back to the dunes to enjoy the lagoons and take in the sunset.

The overnight stay will be in a hammock at a local family's home.

Santo AmaroDay 5

Betânia → Santo Amaro

Santo Amaro

The last day begins around 5:30 AM.

The group boards a boat for an approximately 15-minute ride along the Rio Alegre. Then, the hike begins, covering approximately 11 km over about 3 to 5 hours, with stops to swim and take in the scenery.

Along the way, we'll have the chance to enjoy the trek's final sunrise and make the most of the last lagoons before arriving in Santo Amaro.

Arrival in the city is expected around 10 AM, marking the end of the trek.
