Why do the Lençóis Radical?

A complete crossing through the Lençóis Maranhenses, combining long hikes through the dunes, lagoons, oases, and traditional communities with a kayaking experience along the Rio Alegre to Santo Amaro.

15 km of kayaking on the last day. Swimming ability required.

For those seeking a more complete and challenging experience in the Lençóis Maranhenses, this crossing brings together different ways of exploring the park.

There are four days of hiking through the dunes, passing by lagoons and the oases of Baixa Grande, Queimada dos Britos, Rancharia, and Betânia. On the fifth day, hiking gives way to kayaking, on a route of approximately 15 km along the Rio Alegre to Santo Amaro.

Beyond the scenery, the experience includes overnight stays in hammocks at the homes of native families, offering a closer look at the life and hospitality of the communities living inside and around the park.

Baixa Grande OasisDay 1

Barreirinhas → Oásis Baixa Grande

Baixa Grande Oasis

The group is picked up from lodges starting at 4:30 AM in Barreirinhas. For guests staying in Atins, pickup starts at 6:30 AM.

In a 4x4 vehicle, we travel approximately 2 hours toward the National Park, reaching the area near the Rio Negro. Along the way, we stop for a breakfast snack and to watch the sunrise.

From there, the hike begins, covering approximately 6 km over an average of 2 to 3 hours, until reaching the Baixa Grande Oasis, with stops for swimming in the lagoons.

Arrival at the oasis is expected around 10:30 AM. After lunch and a rest period, we head back to the dunes to enjoy the lagoons and watch the sunset.

Queimada dos Britos OasisDay 2

Oásis Baixa Grande → Oásis Queimada dos Britos

Queimada dos Britos Oasis

Breakfast is served at 4:30 AM, with departure for the hike at 5:00 AM.

The hike covers approximately 12 km over about 5 hours, crossing the Rio Negro and passing through different dune and lagoon landscapes. Along the way, we stop for swimming and to watch the sunrise.

Arrival at Queimada dos Britos is expected around 10:30 AM, followed by lunch and a rest period.

In the afternoon, we head back to the dunes to enjoy the lagoons and watch the sunset.

RanchariaDay 3

Oásis Queimada dos Britos → Rancharia

Rancharia

Breakfast is served at 3:30 AM, with departure expected at 4:00 AM.

The hike to the village of Rancharia covers approximately 14 km, taking an average of 6 hours, including stops for swimming in the lagoons and watching the sunrise.

Arrival is expected around 10:00 AM, with lunch served at 11:00 AM.

After resting, we head back to the dunes, enjoying the lagoons and the sunset.

Rancharia is a small traditional community located within the park and is also known for Lagoa do Bicudo Gordo, one of the largest lagoons in the region.

BetâniaDay 4

Rancharia → Betânia

Betânia

Breakfast is served at 3:30 AM, with departure for the hike at 4:00 AM.

This is one of the longest stretches of the crossing: approximately 18 km of hiking, over about 7 hours, through the dunes to the village of Betânia.

Along the way, we stop to watch the sunrise and swim in the lagoons.

Arrival at Betânia is expected around 11:00 AM. At the edge of the dunes, you can enjoy a swim in the Rio Alegre.

After lunch and rest, we head back to the dunes for more time swimming in the lagoons and watching the sunset.

Santo AmaroDay 5

Betânia → Santo Amaro

Santo Amaro

The final day brings a completely different experience.

Wake-up and breakfast happen between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM. Starting at 7:00 AM, the approximately 15 km kayak route along the Rio Alegre begins, from Betânia to Santo Amaro.

The paddle takes about 3 hours, with stops for swimming and resting along the river.

Arrival at Santo Amaro is expected around 10:30 AM, ending the crossing in a special way, combining trekking, lagoons, traditional communities, and navigation along the Rio Alegre.

Important: swimming ability is required to take part in the kayak route.

It's a challenging crossing.

There are approximately 50 km of hiking through the dunes, with some long stretches and very early departures.

The final day is done by kayak.

It's approximately 15 km of paddling along the Rio Alegre, over about 3 hours. You must know how to swim.

Overnight stays are in hammocks.

Lodging takes place in the homes of native families from the communities along the trek.

You'll carry your own backpack during the hike.

Support luggage of up to 10 kg per person travels separately to Santo Amaro.

Lagoon conditions vary throughout the year.

Water levels depend on rainfall and seasonal conditions.
